In Lock Haven, a quiet little town in Washington State, there is a very special street. Bird Street. The residents of Bird Street are all successful, wealthy, healthy and happy. And their children are all well-mannered and smart and high achievers.
At least they are for eleven months of the year.
In November, however, the ‘Darker Days’ begin. For November’s the month when things take a turn for the worse: accidents, bad luck, familial conflict and illness take hold. And it is in November that a stranger comes to Bird Street to collect the debt owed by the residents.
Because, you see, there is a price that must be paid for all the happiness and good fortune they enjoy for the other eleven months of year. And that price is one human life. Every November. Without fail.
And so it has been for over a hundred years. To ease their guilt, the residents of Bird Street seek out individuals – usually the elderly or the terminally ill – who wish to die with dignity and are content to be helped on their way.
But this year, things don’t go to plan. This year events take a terrifying turn . . .

In Lock Haven, a quiet little town in Washington State, Bird Street is a special place. The residents of this pretty cul-de-sac on the edge of the woods are all successful, healthy, and happy. Their children are prodigies; well-mannered and… unnaturally smart.
But come November, the “Darker Days” descend, bringing accidents, bad luck, conflict, and illness. Luana and Ralph Lewis-da Silva prepare for this, and so do their children Kaila and Django. It is in November when a stranger appears to collect on a longstanding debt. A price must be paid for the good fortune they enjoy the rest of the year. A sacrifice must be made.
So it has been for over a century. To assuage their guilt, the residents of Bird Street choose carefully who will be sent into the woods. Usually, it is an elderly or terminally ill individual who wishes to die with dignity and is content to be helped on their way.

Porque en noviembre comienzan los Días Oscuros. Noviembre es el mes de los accidentes, los conflictos familiares, las enfermedades y, en fin, la mala suerte. Y es en noviembre cuando un forastero llega a Bird Street para cobrar la deuda que los residentes han contraído con él a cambio de su felicidad.
Ese precio es una vida humana. Sin falta.
Pero este año, las cosas no salen según lo previsto. Este año, los Días Oscuros se tuercen de un modo escalofriante...

Wer in der Bird Street wohnt, ist erfolgreich, wohlhabend, gesund und glücklich. Die Kinder allesamt ausgeglichen, wohlerzogen und klug. Zumindest für elf Monate im Jahr. Im November jedoch brechen die dunklen Tage an. Pech, Misserfolg und Krankheit halten Einzug. Im November kommt der Fremde in die Bird Street, um bei den Bewohnern die Schulden einzutreiben. Im November ist die Zeit gekommen, den Preis für all das Glück zu zahlen. Denn es kehrt erst zurück, wenn ein Menschenleben geopfert wird ...
NOVEMBER - THE NETHERLANDS (2022)
Welkom in Bird Street, de gelukkigste straat van de Verenigde Staten. De bewoners wonen in kasten van huizen en zijn stuk voor stuk vitale, weldenkende en – de meesten van hen althans – ruimhartige mensen. En hun kinderen? Die zijn perfect. Je zou kunnen zeggen dat het de bewoners van Bird Street iets té goed gaat.
Tot het november wordt. Dan breken de Donkerder Dagen aan. Luana en Ralph weten het en hun kinderen ook. Ieder jaar in november slaat hun geluk om en worden ze juist overvallen door ongeluk. Na een week of vier keert het geluk terug... maar wel tegen een prijs. Iemand moet sterven in de bossen achter hun huis. Gebeurt dat niet, dan grijpt het onheil om zich heen. En elk jaar stellen Luana en Ralph zich de vraag: hoeveel is een mensenleven waard?
